I've noticed that if I am loading a website in a tab and I prompt Google Reader Watcher to load Google Reader in a new tab, it will hijack that tab that I have a website loading in, instead of opening a new tab to load Google Reader in. That's a tricky one. If you set that option, the extension will load the Google Reader into the first tab which is blank. When you start to load a page, but it's slow and doesn't respond anything when you clicks on the clicks on the GRW icon, it will load into that tab, because it's url is still about:blank.
I will try something, hopefully it's possible to check that something is loading in a window.
